The Jefferson's Daughters - Female Intellectual Authority
Catherine Kerrison, Ph.D.
March 16, 2010
Our program this month is Jefferson's Daughters presented by Catherine Kerrison, Ph.D., Associate Professor of History and Director of Academics, Gender and Women's Studies Program at Villanova University and AAUW American Fellowship recipient. Dr. Kerrison will present her work on female intellectual authority focusing on Thomas Jefferson's daughters. What was it like to be female and grow up at Monticello? How did Jefferson's daughters and granddaughters think about themselves, and their place in the new republic of which their father and grandfather was a chief architect? The three daughters of Thomas Jefferson shaped their identities in very different ways. Martha Jefferson Randolph and Maria Jefferson Eppes, Jefferson's daughters with his wife Martha Wayles Skelton, lived very different lives. Harriet Hemings, Jefferson's daughter with his slave Sally Hemings, left Monticello at age 21, moved to Washington D.C. and disappeared from the historical record, as she passed as a free-born white. Please join us to learn more about the challenges that early American women faced and still face to claim their authority.

Help Needed For The 2010 Vacation, Dinner & Entertainment Auction
The 2010 auction donation letter and the 2010 auction sponsor letter are both available for download. In January, for your convenience, you will receive a printed copy of both of these letters in the mail. We hope each member will try to obtain a sponsor donation from a local business (monetary donations in any amount are welcome). If we all work together on this, our auction expenses will be covered and AAUW scholarships will benefit. Item donations (gift certificates or merchandise) are also needed to add to our auction inventory. Every contact will be important! Thanks in advance for your help. The Auction will take place on March 26, 2010. Co-chairs Nancy, Carolyn and Jan.
