Students in grades 5 to 7 are invited to participate in Discover the Future: A Science and Math Extravaganza, Showcasing Women in Science and Math and Whole Day of Exciting Hands-on Activities. This event is sponsored by AAUW – Lansdale Branch. Although all students in 5th, 6th and 7th grades are invited, girls are especially encouraged to attend to experience and interact with professional female role models working in science and math fields.
The keynote speaker will be Dr. Irene Pepperberg, an expert on the training of grey parrots and author of the book, "Alex and Me." She is an adjunct associate professor at the Dept. of Psychology, Brandeis University, Waltham, MA. She is also a lecturer and research associate at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. The main focus of her work is to determine the cognitive and communicative abilities of these birds, and compare their abilities with those of great apes, marine mammals, and young children. She is studying the mechanisms of their learning as well as the outcomes.

Continuing with an expanded outreach plan, we are anticipating 120 or more student participants at Discover the Future. In addition, the students in North Penn High School's National Honor Society and Key Club will be approached with the volunteer opportunity to assist the children and presenters on the day of the event.
There is a fee of $8 for early registrants, or $10 if postmarked after March 5.
