EXCELLENCE IN WRITING

The Excellence in Writing program has been offered by the Lansdale AAUW since 1980. This program is open to all the local high school students, both girls and boys. The program is a creative writing contest whose goal is to recognize creative abilities in these students. Each student is asked to submit a selection of creative writing, poetry or prose, limited to 1500 words. The entries are numbered so that the author is anonymous, and then they are evaluated and scored by the Lansdale AAUW Excellence in Writing committee. Each submission is read by a minimum of four committee members. The scores are totaled. Then the entire committee reviews the top ranked submissions, and the winners are determined. Typically, the committee receives between 300 to 400 entries per year and picks 18 to 20 winners. Past winners have included students at North Penn, Wissahickon, Souderton, Christopher Dock, and Germantown Academy high schools. The winners are invited to an awards ceremony where they are given a certificate of achievement and a small gift. The students are then given the opportunity to read their winning selection. Over the years we have received some outstanding entries that truly demonstrate the creative talent in these young people.
